Description
Under columns 5 through 8 of 1991P-1DER-005WS the stairs carry a light ripple, offset at 180°, straight toward the bottom of the coin. TrailDies calls this wavy steps, the WS in the code: trails running across the Memorial steps so they look bent. Ahead of it, 1991P gives the date and mint, 1 a cent, DER a reverse-side extension and 005 the file. The late-die-state coin TrailDies describes shows nothing on the obverse. Its reverse has a crack running from the cornice's left corner to the rim, and a second one is forming along the base line and out into the field above NT in CENT. The cause usually given is polishing of the die with a rotary tool; others point to the die moving against the hub.
