1991 (P) Lincoln Memorial Cent - P-1DER-004WS Trail Die Reverse

Description

Louis Schaeffer of Maryland found 1991P-1DER-004WS, a 1991 Philadelphia cent with wavy steps on the reverse. TrailDies' number lists the date and mint, the denomination as 1, DER for an extension of the reverse design, 004 as the file and WS for the wavy-step type, in which trails pass over the Memorial's stairs and leave them crooked. Under columns 5, 6 and 7 the stairs bend moderately to lightly, with the left side carrying most of it, and the entry is headed 180°, due south. The middle-die-state coin has two small gouges below the right edge of Lincoln's bust and no reverse markers listed. As usually explained, trails come from polishing of the die with a rotary buff; a smaller view ties them to the die moving against the hub.
