1991 (P) Lincoln Memorial Cent - P-1DER-003T Trail Die Reverse

Description

1991P-1DER-003T has light trails at 330°, pointing up and to the left, north-northwest. They touch the upper ends of columns 4 and 5, plus the top edges of T, E and D in UNITED and parts of E PLURIBUS UNUM, where the letter tops look stretched. On TED the lines pass over the letters' horizontal bars. In the number, 1991P is a Philadelphia date and 1 a cent; DER tells you the design extension is on the reverse; 003 is its file, and T stands for trails. The coin described is from early in the life of both dies; the obverse shows nothing to note, while the reverse has a gouge on top of the left post and another above the left end of the building's base. Trails are commonly blamed on rotary polishing of the die; some attribute them to the die moving against the hub.
