1991 (P) Lincoln Memorial Cent - P-1DER-002WS Trail Die Reverse

Description

Both effects on 1991P-1DER-002WS are light. Fluting from columns 2 and 3 extends a little way into the stylobate, and the stairs beneath columns 6, 7 and 8 bend, chiefly on their left side. That stair bending, the wavy steps of the WS suffix, is what trails look like when they cross the Memorial's staircase. The direction is 180°, due south. The code's other parts: 1991P gives date and mint, the 1 the denomination, DER the design-extension-reverse label TrailDies uses, and 002 the file. On the middle-die-state coin in the entry, small gouges lie by the first 9 of the date and two scratches sit right of Lincoln's bow tie; the reverse has gouges below the right end of the Memorial's base. Trails are usually explained by rotary polishing of the die, though some attribute them to the die moving against the hub.
