Description
1991P-1DER-001WS: a 1991 Philadelphia cent (1991P, 1) whose reverse has a design extension (DER), recorded as file 001 with the wavy-step suffix WS. Wavy steps happen when trails run across the stairs of the Lincoln Memorial and leave them looking bent. Here columns 5, 6 and 7 stand over moderately bent stairs, more on the left side, at 180°, straight down. TrailDies' coin comes from late in the die's life. A small gouge under the E of LIBERTY marks the obverse; the reverse has a crack from the left tip of the cornice to the N of UNITED and on into the rim, and another climbing from the left corner of the roof to the D of UNITED. Most specialists trace trails to rotary polishing of the die, while a minority points to movement against the hub.
Die Markers
- Stage “C”, obverse is LDS – small die gouge under the E of LIBERTY
- Reverse is LDS – die crack from left cornice tip to the N in UNITED and into the rim. Die crack from the left corner of the Memorial’s roof up to the D in UNITED.
