1990 (P) Lincoln Memorial Cent - P-1DER-009WS Trail Die Reverse

Description

Louis Schaeffer found the die TrailDies lists as 1990P-1DER-009WS. Reading the number: 1990 and P give the year and the Philadelphia Mint, 1 the one-cent denomination, DER the reverse as the side with the extension, 009 the file, and WS wavy steps, where trails cross the stairs of the Lincoln Memorial and bend them. The bending is light and limited to columns 5, 6 and 7, and it leans a little west of south, at 190°. The coin in question comes late in the die's life and has a clean obverse. Two reverse cracks help identify it: one runs from the tip of the cornice on the left, through the I of UNITED, onto the rim, and the other from the right tip of the base out to the rim. Trails are usually laid to polishing of the die with a rotary buff; a smaller group attributes them to the die moving against the hub.

• Stage “C”, obverse is LDS – none noted.
• Reverse is LDS – die crack from the left cornice tip, through the I of UNITED and onto the rim. Die crack from the right base tip to the rim.
