1990 (P) Lincoln Memorial Cent - P-1DER-005WS Trail Die Reverse

Description

The wavy steps on 1990P-1DER-005WS are faint, but they reach a long way, nearly to the bottom stair, under columns 6, 7 and 8. Wavy steps (the WS of the code) are trails across the Memorial's staircase that give its edges a bent look. The direction here is 160°, south-southeast, down and a little to the right. The remaining parts of the number give a 1990 Philadelphia cent (1990P, 1), the reverse-side extension code DER, and file 005. TrailDies describes a late-die-state coin: an old obverse gouge to the left of IN, a small reverse gouge beneath the N of UNITED, and a crack from the left corner of the cornice out to the rim. Trails like these are typically traced to a rotary buff used to polish the die, though some think the die moved against the hub.
