1990P-1DER-003WS Trail Die Reverse

Description

Offset at 190 degrees — just 10 degrees past the common 180-degree inverted position — 1990P-1DER-003WS on the 1990 Philadelphia Lincoln Memorial cent shows moderate fluting extending into the stylobate under column 3 and moderate step deviation at columns 5, 6, and 7. The near-180-degree offset with slight clockwise rotation indicates the dies were almost perfectly opposed but with a minor angular misalignment when the contact event occurred, producing trail line geometry subtly different from a true 180-degree transfer. Examined at Stage B mid-die state (MDS), die markers include a gouge above and to the right of the VDB designer's initials, a die crack extending from the left cornice through the I in UNITED to the rim, and a gouge near the last A in AMERICA. The die crack from cornice through I to the rim traces a significant path across the reverse, representing stress fracture progression that would continue to extend with further die use. The gouge near VDB — Frank Lloyd Wright's initials honoring Victor David Brenner, the coin's designer — places a diagnostic marker in a location collectors frequently examine. Struck at Philadelphia on copper-plated zinc planchets composed of 97.5% zinc and 2.5% copper, weighing 2.5 grams and measuring 19mm. DIE MAKERS : Stage “B”, obverse is MDS – die gouge above and to the right of VDB. Small die gouge next to the last A in AMERICA.
