TrailDies files this 1990 Philadelphia cent reverse as 1990P-1DER-003WS. Take the code apart and you get the date with its P mint letter, the cent's 1, DER (TrailDies' shorthand for design extension, reverse), file number 003, and WS, wavy steps: trails crossing the Memorial's stairs so that their edges ripple. The stairs here ripple moderately to lightly under columns 5, 6 and 7, and the fluting of column 3 reaches moderately into the stylobate. The offset direction is 190°, slightly west of due south. On the middle-die-state coin in the entry, the obverse shows a gouge up and to the right of VDB, and the reverse a crack starting at the left cornice tip, passing through the I of UNITED and ending in the rim, with a small gouge beside the last A of AMERICA. Rotary polishing of the die is the explanation most often given, though some point to the die moving against the hub.
