1990 (P) Lincoln Memorial Cent - P-1DER-002WS Trail Die Reverse

Description

Columns 2 and 3 on 1990P-1DER-002WS have their fluting carried down into the stylobate, a moderate effect, while the stairs under columns 5 through 8 bend moderately, more so on their left half. Both run at 180°, straight toward the bottom of the coin. That bending is what TrailDies means by wavy steps, the WS at the end of the code; ahead of it sit the date and Philadelphia mint letter, a 1 for the denomination, DER, which marks a reverse-side design extension, and the file number 002. The coin described comes from late in the die's life. Its obverse has a long scratch heading north from the B of LIBERTY, another lying over the word, and more beneath the date; the reverse has a heavy scratch running from ONE's E across to the C of CENT. Die polishing with a rotary buff is the usual explanation for trails, though some attribute them to die-to-hub movement.
