1990 (P) Lincoln Memorial Cent - P-1DEO-002T Trail Die Obverse

Description

On 1990P-1DEO-002T the trails rise from the tops of the letters of IN GOD WE TRUST and point straight up toward the rim, at 000°, due north. The code reads as a 1990 Philadelphia (P) cent (1), with DEO, TrailDies' label for an obverse design extension, file 002, and T for trails. Because the die was well worn, metal flow lines from its deterioration mix with the trails and make them stand out more. The coin TrailDies describes is a late die state; an old gouge above the B of LIBERTY and another above the T of CENT on the reverse help pin it down. George dePozsgay found the die. Most specialists put trails down to polishing of the die with a rotary buff, though some blame the die moving against the hub.
