1990P-1DEO-002T Trail Die Obverse

Description

The second obverse trail die documented for the 1990 Philadelphia Lincoln Memorial cent, 1990P-1DEO-002T was examined at Stage C late die state (LDS) — indicating the obverse die had accumulated significant wear and fatigue by the time the specimen was struck. Diagnostic markers include an old die gouge positioned above the B in LIBERTY and a gouge above the T in CENT on the reverse die used with this obverse. The late die state classification suggests this die had been in service through a substantial production run, potentially hundreds of thousands of impressions, before the examined coin was produced. Trail die events themselves occur early in a die's service — typically during initial die installation or press adjustment — but the resulting design transfer remains visible throughout the die's entire lifespan, appearing on every coin struck from that die regardless of die state. This variety was identified by George dePozsgay, whose attribution work helped establish the die gouge markers that differentiate 1DEO-002T from the Shahid-discovered 1DEO-001T. Struck at Philadelphia on copper-plated zinc planchets composed of 97.5% zinc and 2.5% copper, weighing 2.5 grams and measuring 19mm.
