Description

Sharing the 190-degree trail offset with 004WS, the 1989P-1DER-005WS displays moderate fluting under columns 2 and 3 along with light step deviation under columns 5 through 8 of the Lincoln Memorial. The presence of moderate fluting on the left side (columns 2-3) combined with light step deviation in the center (columns 5-8) maps a displacement pattern where the left portion of the design received a stronger secondary impression than the center — a distribution that differs from varieties where the center columns show the strongest trail evidence. Classified at Stage B, mid-die state (MDS), the obverse carries gouges positioned under the E and to the right of the Y in LIBERTY — two markers clustered in the same legend word that together provide a focused attribution zone. A gouge in bay 11 on the reverse adds a third fixed marker on the opposite side of the coin. The three-gouge marker profile — two in LIBERTY on the obverse, one in bay 11 on the reverse — creates a reliable attribution framework that supplements the trail die evidence, particularly useful on specimens where the light step deviation has been softened by wear or strike quality.
