1989 (P) Lincoln Memorial Cent - P-1DER-005WS Trail Die Reverse

Description

Fluting lines from columns 2 and 3 extend moderately into the stylobate on 1989P-1DER-005WS, and the steps below columns 5 to 8 waver lightly, all at 190°, slightly west of south. Those wavering stairs are what TrailDies means by wavy steps, the WS at the end of the number; before it come the Philadelphia date, the cent digit, DER for its reverse design extension and file 005. Two small gouges on the obverse, one under the E of LIBERTY and one to the right of the Y, together with a small gouge low in bay 11, identify the middle-die-state coin TrailDies describes. Trails are usually laid to polishing of the die with a rotary buff, though some lay them to the die moving against the hub.
