1989P-1DER-004WS Trail Die Reverse

Description

Measured at a 190-degree trail offset, the 1989P-1DER-004WS shows light step deviation under columns 5 through 8 of the Lincoln Memorial — a narrower column range than the 5-through-9 span documented on several companion WS varieties, suggesting the hub displacement on this die was either smaller in magnitude or oriented at a slightly different angle. The WS (Wide Spread/Wavy Steps) suffix confirms the trail impression includes the characteristic staircase warping effect. Classified at Stage B, mid-die state (MDS), this die is distinguished by heavy die scratching on the right side of the Memorial bays and through E PLURIBUS UNUM on the reverse — an extensive network of surface marks that cuts across both the architectural detail and the motto. The density of reverse scratching through both the bays and EPU creates one of the most heavily marked die surfaces among the 1989-P trail die reverses, providing multiple attribution reference points even when the light step deviation itself may be difficult to discern on worn specimens. The 190-degree offset is close to the 180-degree direct opposition seen on 003WS, placing these two varieties in a similar geometric family. Struck at the Philadelphia Mint on copper-plated zinc planchets (97.5% zinc, 2.5% copper) at 2.5 grams and 19mm.
