Description

Oriented at a 180-degree offset — a direct opposition between primary and secondary hub impressions — the 1989P-1DER-003WS trail die reverse shows moderate-to-light fluting under columns 11 and 12 and moderate step deviation under columns 5 through 9 of the Lincoln Memorial. The 180-degree offset is geometrically significant because it means the secondary hub impression was displaced in the exact opposite direction from the primary, creating trail features that extend directly away from the design elements they shadow. The WS (Wide Spread/Wavy Steps) classification confirms both measurable spread between impressions and the characteristic staircase distortion. Classified at Stage B, mid-die state (MDS), the obverse carries die scratches originating from the L of LIBERTY — linear surface marks that radiate from this specific letter. The concentration of fluting on the right side of the Memorial (columns 11-12) with step deviation in the center (columns 5-9) indicates the hub displacement direction preferentially affected the right-center portion of the architectural design, while leaving the left columns relatively unaffected.
