Description

The sole trail die obverse documented for the 1989 Philadelphia Mint Lincoln Memorial cent, 1989P-1DEO-001 exhibits light trail lines extending from the left top of the letters LIBER in LIBERTY, with the trail offset measured at 340 degrees — placing the secondary hub impression in the upper-left quadrant relative to the primary design. Trail dies result from incomplete or misaligned hubbing during die manufacture, where a secondary impression from the hub creates faint ghost-like lines that extend from the primary design elements. Classified at Stage B with a mid-die state (MDS) designation, the obverse carries a die dot positioned above the 9 in the date — a small raised point created by a pit in the die face. A rim gouge is present below the collar, providing a secondary marker at the coin's edge. Trail die obverses are less commonly cataloged than trail die reverses on Lincoln Memorial cents, as Lincoln's portrait contains fewer fine geometric elements than the Memorial's columnar architecture, making trail evidence harder to detect on the obverse.
