1989 (P) Lincoln Memorial Cent - P-1DEO-001 Trail Die Obverse

Description

1989P-1DEO-001 carries no suffix after its file number, but TrailDies files it with its trail dies: light lines leave the upper left of the L, I, B, E and R of LIBERTY on this 1989 Philadelphia cent obverse and point to 340°, north-northwest. Otherwise the number is simple: the 1989P date, the cent digit, DEO for an obverse design extension and file 001. The obverse at middle die state has a die dot above the 9 and a gouge at the rim below the collar of Lincoln's coat; nothing is noted on the reverse. Trails are typically explained by polishing of the die with a rotary buff; a minority view explains them by the die moving against the hub.
