Description
1988P-1DER-010WST combines the two effects TrailDies tracks, since WST means wavy steps and trails. On this 1988 Philadelphia cent reverse, file 010 in the DER (design extension reverse) series, fluting from columns 1, 2 and 3 extends moderately into the stylobate, the steps under columns 5, 6 and 7 bend lightly to moderately, and the letters of CENT have trails of their own. Every line runs at 180°, due south. Both dies are early. A small gouge in the field facing Lincoln's forehead marks the obverse, and another small gouge sits over the E of CENT. Jean Lee found it. Polishing of the die with a rotary buff is the leading explanation for trails, with the die moving against the hub as the other.
