1988 (P) Lincoln Memorial Cent - P-1DER-009T Trail Die Reverse

Description

Only the right-hand letters of the motto carry trails on 1988P-1DER-009T, and they run at 330°, northwest, toward the upper left of the coin. The code starts with the year and Philadelphia mint, adds 1 for the denomination and DER for TrailDies' reverse design extension class, and ends with file 009 and a T for trails. Two small gouges identify the early-state coin, one below the word IN on the obverse and one under the D of UNITED on the reverse. Jean Lee is credited with finding it. Polishing of the die with a rotary buff is the explanation most specialists accept for trails, while others accept the idea of the die moving against the hub.
