1988 (P) Lincoln Memorial Cent - P-1DER-004WST Trail Die Reverse

Description

1988P-1DER-004WST shows both kinds of lines on a 1988 Philadelphia cent reverse, which is what the WST suffix means: wavy steps plus trails. The stairs bend lightly to moderately below columns 5 through 9, single fluting lines reach into the stylobate under columns 2, 3, 11 and 12, and the lines carry on down to CENT, showing at the lower left corners of its letters, all at 190°. TrailDies calls such combinations uncommon and says this one shows trails and wavy steps are one effect in different places. Early-state reverse markers: scratches from the last A of AMERICA down to the initials, and a small gouge on the N of CENT, on its left upright. Louis Schaeffer of Maryland found it. Trails are mostly put down to polishing of the die with a rotary buff, while some put them down to the die moving against the hub.
