1988 (P) Lincoln Memorial Cent - P-1DER-003T Trail Die Reverse

Description

1988P-1DER-003T has only a few isolated trails, on the right-hand corners of three letters in CENT, the C, E and N. They point to 100°, just south of due east, toward the right edge of the coin. The number decodes as 1988 Philadelphia (1988P), cent (1), reverse design extension (DER), file 003 and trails (T). The reverse has no markers listed at its middle die state, but the obverse shows two parallel scratches in the field before Lincoln's forehead. Louis Schaeffer of Maryland found the die. Specialists generally connect trails with polishing of the die by a rotary buff, though a minority connects them with the die moving against the hub.
