1988 (P) Lincoln Memorial Cent - P-1DEO-010T Trail Die Obverse

Description

1988P-1DEO-010T is another 1988 Philadelphia cent obverse with trails on the tops of the LIBERTY letters, these aimed at 330°, northwest. In TrailDies' numbering, 1988P gives the date and mint, 1 the cent, DEO the obverse design extension, 010 the file and T the trails. With several 1988-P LIBERTY dies on file at 300°, 330° and 340°, the markers help: on this middle-die-state coin a crack runs between the I and N of IN, and a small gouge sits inside the U of UNITED on the reverse. Joe Koelling found it. Trails are commonly attributed to polishing of the die with a rotary buff, though some prefer the explanation of the die moving against the hub.
