Description

Found by Cal Goddard, 1988P-1DEO-006T is the sixth trail die obverse cataloged for the 1988 Philadelphia Lincoln Memorial cent, continuing a sequence that ultimately reaches ten varieties — a count reflecting both the high production volume at Philadelphia and the systematic searching efforts of variety specialists during this era. Trail dies form when the hub makes imperfect contact with the working die during the die-making process, and the "T" designation indicates a tilted hub orientation that leaves directional ghost traces of design elements. The obverse in Stage A (early die state) shows no significant markers beyond the trail impression. On the reverse, also in early die state, small die gouges appear below the last S of STATES and below the E of ONE, providing the attribution markers necessary to distinguish this die from the nine other trail die obverses documented for 1988-P. Cal Goddard, who also discovered 1DEO-007T, 1DEO-008T, and 1DEO-009T, was one of the most prolific contributors to the 1988-P trail die catalog, demonstrating the kind of focused, systematic examination of roll quantities that drives variety discovery on modern Lincoln cents. Struck at the Philadelphia Mint on copper-plated zinc planchets composed of 97.5% zinc and 2.5% copper, weighing 2.5 grams at 19mm diameter.
