Error
Description
On 1988P-1DEO-004T the trails leave the upper left corners of the LIBERTY letters and run at 300°, toward the upper left of the coin. The code stands for 1988, Philadelphia, cent (1), design extension obverse (DEO), file 004, trails (T). The obverse itself is early with no markers, but the reverse used with it is late and covered in very heavy die scratches. TrailDies explains these as an effort to remove a die clash, and traces of the clash still show in bays 3 and 8. That scratched reverse separates it from file 002, which has trails on the same letters at a different angle. Trails are usually said to come from polishing the die with a rotary buff, though some say the die moved against the hub.
Die Markers
- Stage “A”, obverse is EDS – none noted.
- Reverse is LDS- very heavy die scratching is seen on the entire reverse surface. This was preformed to remove a die clash, which can be seen still in bays 3 and 8.
