1988 (P) Lincoln Memorial Cent - P-1DEO-001T Trail Die Obverse

Description

Trails on 1988P-1DEO-001T hang from the bottoms of the letters of LIBERTY and point straight down the coin, an offset direction of 180°. TrailDies' file number shows a 1988 Philadelphia cent (1988P, 1) with an obverse design extension (DEO), file 001, type T for trails. The coin it describes comes from late in the die's life; its reverse has rim-to-base cracks at both lower corners of the Memorial, one climbing toward the stylobate and the other following the base line. Louis Schaeffer found it. The cause usually given for trails is polishing of the die face with a rotary buff; a smaller group of writers attributes them to movement of the die against the hub.

• Reverse is LDS – die crack from the rim into the left base tip and moving up towards the stylobate. Die crack from the rim into the right base tip and moving along the base line.
