1988-D Repunched Mintmark RPM-001

Description

RPM-001 on the 1988-D Roosevelt Dime is the first documented repunched mintmark for this date and mint, catalogued by VarietyVista under die pair UVC-629, DMR-002. The repunch is a D/D South: the secondary D impression is displaced to the south of the final mintmark position, leaving the ghost of the first punch visible below the primary D. Die state progression covers two documented stages: Stage A is Early Die State. Stage B advances to a Middle Die State defined by a light die crack running east to west in Lincoln's hair on the obverse, with the reverse reaching Late Die State — an unusual pairing in which the reverse has progressed further in die deterioration than the obverse at the same die stage. The 1988-D Roosevelt Dime was struck in copper-nickel clad composition at the Denver Mint. As the first-catalogued RPM for this date, RPM-001 serves as the baseline variety for all subsequent D-mint repunches on 1988 dimes.
