1988 (P) Lincoln Memorial Cent - Transitional Reverse Design WTRD-002

Description

1988 WTRD-002 is a transitional reverse design on the 1988 Lincoln Memorial cent, cataloged by the Wexler team. Wexler describes it as a 1988 cent struck with the 1989 reverse design. Obverse Stage A shows many NW-to-SE scratches in the space between the vest and the 1 of the date, many WSW-to-ENE scratches across and around TRUST, and a strong west-to-east scratch below the ST of TRUST. Stage B shows clash marks on both sides of the neck: one left of the neck's back, another right of the throat. Stage C was struck from a new obverse die and shows nothing significant. On reverse Stage A, above the Memorial's right base a scratch runs NW to SE; between the lower parts of the E and S in STATES, parallel scratches run west to east; a WNW-to-ESE scratch crosses between the fifth and sixth columns near their bases; and a scratch rises NNW from inside the lower right of the U in UNITED to the rim. On reverse Stage B, a clash mark meets the Memorial roof at its top, SSE of the dot right after the M in UNUM. Reverse Stage C still shows the west-to-east parallel scratches between the bottoms of the E and S in STATES, and the WNW-to-ESE scratch between the bases of the fifth and sixth columns; the other markers from Stages A and B are either gone or very weak. David Carten submitted Stage A, Wayne Perry Stage B, and Joseph Koelling Stage C. CONECA lists it as Die #1.
