1988 (P) Lincoln Memorial Cent - Transitional Reverse Design WTRD-001

Description

1988 WTRD-001 is a transitional reverse design on the 1988 Lincoln Memorial cent, cataloged by the Wexler team. Wexler describes it as a 1988 cent struck with the 1989 reverse design. On obverse Stage A, above the ERTY in LIBERTY, several scratches point NE and two parallel scratches run west to east; below those letters, several more run WSW to ENE. A west-to-east scratch also lies between the vest and the 1's top. Obverse Stage B is unchanged from Stage A. Reverse Stage A is a very early die state (VEDS), with no significant markers. On reverse Stage B, a die crack starts at the left cornice's top, passes through the I of UNITED and reaches the rim. Billy G. Crawford submitted the variety, and Joseph Koelling upgraded it. CONECA lists it as Die #3, and Wexler notes that this die crack appears on Stage B examples of 1988 WTRD-001.
