1987 (P) Lincoln Memorial Cent - P-1DER-013WS Trail Die Reverse

Description

TrailDies lists 1987P-1DER-013WS for a 1987 Philadelphia cent. In its system the digit before DER gives the denomination (1, a cent), DER itself flags a reverse design extension, and 013WS is the file number with the wavy-step code. Light lines cross the stairs below columns 5, 6, 7 and 8, so the steps there look slightly rippled, and they run straight down, 180°. The coin TrailDies saw is from a late middle die state. Its obverse shows nothing distinctive, but the reverse is heavily scratched, with horizontal strokes above the motto and under the base of the building and vertical ones in the bays between the columns. Credit for the find goes to Louis Schaeffer. Rotary polishing of the die is the explanation most often given for these lines, though some put them down to the die moving against the hub.
