1987 (P) Lincoln Memorial Cent - P-1DER-011T Trail Die Reverse

Description

1987P-1DER-011T is a 1987 Philadelphia Lincoln cent reverse in TrailDies' files. Reading the number left to right: year and P mint letter, a lone 1 for the one-cent coin, DER for what TrailDies calls a design extension on the reverse, file 011, and a closing T for trails. Short lines leave the upper left corners of most of the left-hand letters in the motto E PLURIBUS UNUM, and fainter ones show on OF. They point to 300°, west-northwest, up and to the left. Both sides of the coin are late in the die's life: the obverse is heavily scratched, mostly through LIBERTY on its left side, and on the reverse one deep scratch runs from the O to the N of ONE while another joins the C and E of CENT. Louis Schaeffer found the die. Most specialists blame trails like these on polishing of the die with a rotary buff, while some believe the die moved against the hub.

Die Markers

• Stage “C”, obverse is LDS – heavy die scratching, especially through LIBERTY is seen on the left side of the die.
• Reverse is LDS – a heavy die scratch goes through the O over to the N of ONE. Another heavy die scratch starts at the C and ends at the E of CENT.
