Description
The step deviation on 1987P-1DER-010WS is very light, under columns 5, 6, 7 and 8, and strongest on the left side, with the heading direction 180°, due south. Wavy steps are trails that cross the Memorial's stairs and make them look slightly bent. TrailDies numbers it with the 1987P date and mint first, then 1 for one cent and DER for the reverse side, then file 010, and finally WS, its wavy-step label. Both dies were in their middle state (MDS, stage B) when it was struck. Heavy scratching runs through the first part of LIBERTY and diagonal scratching through the date; no reverse markers are listed. Louis Schaeffer of Maryland found the die. Wavy steps are usually attributed to polishing of the die with a rotary tool, though some attribute them to the die moving against the hub.
Die Markers
- Stage “B”, obverse is MDS – heavy die scratching through the first part of LIBERTY. Diagonal die scratching through the date.
