1987 (P) Lincoln Memorial Cent - P-1DER-009T Trail Die Reverse

Description

1987P-1DER-009T has trails scattered across the reverse: on the E of UNITED, most of STATES, the word OF, the M and E of AMERICA, some letters of the motto EPU, and the cornice's left corner. All run due north at 000°. Its code reads as 1987 Philadelphia, one-cent piece, design extension on the reverse, file 009, trails. TrailDies' coin was struck late in the die's life and the lines look soft; earlier strikes may show more and stronger ones. Two states are listed: stage C, with small die dots around the 8 and 9 of the date and two dots near column 12, and stage D, with level scratching on the obverse and vertical scratching in bays 1 to 3. Louis Schaeffer of Maryland located this die. Trails are generally attributed to polishing the die with a rotary buff, though some attribute them to the die moving against the hub.
