Description
1987P-1DER-008WS has moderate step deviation spanning columns 4 through 8, one column further left than most of its 1987 Philadelphia neighbors. The offset is 170°, just east of due south. WS marks the wavy-step type, where trails run across the Memorial's stairs and bend them; the rest of TrailDies' code is the 1987P date, the cent's 1, DER for the reverse and file 008. Nothing is listed for the obverse of this mid-life (stage B) coin. On the reverse, a curved scratch lies beneath the C of AMERICA and a small gouge sits just left of CENT's T. Louis Schaeffer of Maryland is named as the finder. Wavy steps are usually attributed to polishing of the die with a rotary tool; others attribute them to the die moving against the hub.
Die Markers
- Stage “B”, obverse is MDS – none noted.
- Reverse is MDS – curved die scratch under the C of AMERICA. Small die gouge to the left of the T in CENT.
