1987 (P) Lincoln Memorial Cent - P-1DER-006T Trail Die Reverse

Description

1987P-1DER-006T has trails at the upper left of the M, E and R in AMERICA, running toward 350°, slightly west of north. Its number names a Philadelphia cent of 1987 (1987P, then 1), puts the design extension on the reverse (DER), and closes with the file, 006, and T, the trails marker. The entry lists the coin as stage A but grades its two sides very differently: the obverse is very late, with heavy flow lines near the rim and a small gouge beneath IN, while the reverse is early, with a crack high in bay 2 and another on the upper part of column 3. The finder was Louis Schaeffer of Maryland. Trails are usually attributed to polishing of the die with a rotary tool, though some attribute them to the die moving against the hub.
