Description
TrailDies' 1987P-1DER-005WS has moderate step deviation beneath the four central columns, 5 through 8, the heading direction being 180°, due south. In a wavy-step die, trails pass over the Memorial's stairs and leave their edges looking bent. The code's segments are 1987P (date and mint), 1 (cent), DER (reverse design extension), 005 (file) and WS (wavy steps). The entry gives only one marker, on a reverse graded MDS: a small die dot beside the T in CENT, on its right. TrailDies credits the find to Louis Schaeffer of Maryland. Wavy steps are generally attributed to polishing of the die with a rotary buff, while a minority view links them to the die moving against the hub.
