Description

1987P-1DER-004WS shows moderate step deviation under columns 5 through 8, with an offset of 180°, straight down the coin. Step deviation is TrailDies' term for trails running across the Memorial's stairs so the steps appear to wave, hence the WS at the end of the code. The code also gives the 1987 Philadelphia date, the cent (1), a reverse design extension (DER) and file 004. TrailDies notes no fluting extension. The coin, from mid-way through the dies' life (stage B), has a clean obverse; on the reverse, diagonal scratches cross ONE and heavy scratching runs through the T of CENT. No finder is named. Trails of this kind are usually attributed to polishing the die with a rotary tool, though some attribute them to the die moving against the hub.
