Description

1987P-1DER-002WS is a Philadelphia 1987 Lincoln cent reverse with wavy steps. Read left to right, the code gives the date and mint (1987P), the cent (1), a design extension on the reverse (DER), the file (002) and the type (WS, wavy steps). TrailDies sees a moderate bend in the stairs below the central columns, 5 through 8, strongest on the left half, with the lines running due south at 180°. On the middle-die-state coin it describes, the obverse has a gouge in the upper loop of the 9 in the date and the reverse a gouge below the right end of the Memorial's base. The accepted explanation for trails of this kind is die polishing, with die-to-hub movement as the alternative some propose.
