Description
Moderate trails rise from the tops of the B, E, R, T and Y of LIBERTY on 1987P-1DEO-001T, toward 330°, north-northwest. TrailDies' file code reads 1987 Philadelphia (1987P), one cent (1), obverse design extension (DEO), file 001, trails (T). Its obverse, at stage B (MDS), has scratches beneath Lincoln's chin; its reverse has a gouge at the very middle of UNITED's U. TrailDies credits Bob Piazza of Florida with finding and photographing the die. The common explanation for trails is polishing of the die with a rotary buff, though some attribute them to the die moving against the hub.
