1986 (P) Lincoln Memorial Cent - P-1DER-001WST Trail Die Reverse

Description

1986P-1DER-001WST combines wavy steps with trails, which is what the WST ending means; the rest is the 1986 Philadelphia date, the cent's 1, DER for the reverse side and file 001. Wavy steps are trails running across the Memorial's stairs so the steps look bent, and here the bending is light, under columns 6, 7 and 8. The stylobate beneath columns 10 and 11 also shows level distortion. TrailDies takes the direction, 150°, south-southeast, from a trail on the F of the designer's initials FG, and notes distortion on the letters of the motto EPU too. TrailDies' stage B coin has a gouge at the center of the O in ONE and another above the NT of CENT. No finder is named. Trails of this kind are usually attributed to polishing the die with a rotary buff, though some attribute them to the die moving against the hub.
