1986 (P) Lincoln Memorial Cent - P-1DEO-002T Trail Die Obverse

Description

1986P-1DEO-002T shows light trails off the E of WE and the first T of TRUST, running due east at 090°, straight toward the right side of the coin. Read piece by piece, the number holds the 1986 date and its P, a 1 that stands for the cent, DEO to say the obverse is the affected side, file 002, and T to class it with the trail dies. On this stage B coin, two scratches run above WE, and the reverse has gouges beside the S of PLURIBUS and the M of UNUM. Louis Schaeffer found the die. Trails are generally put down to polishing the die with a rotary tool; a minority view attributes them to the die moving against the hub.
