1986P-1DEO-001T Trail Die Obverse

Description

Documented at Stage C in late die state, 1986P-1DEO-001T on the 1986 Philadelphia Lincoln Memorial cent exhibits trail die effects on the obverse — raised ridges and progressive distortion created by metal flow on the die's working surface under repeated coining pressure. The late die state classification is corroborated by heavy die scratching visible across the obverse, particularly concentrated over RTY of LIBERTY, where accumulated wear and die maintenance abrasion have left pronounced surface marks. The reverse is also in late die state, with heavy die scratching on the lower part of the die under the Memorial building. Trail dies develop as a die ages and its surface metal begins to shift directionally under the immense pressures of striking, creating shelf-like ridges that impart corresponding raised features on struck coins. Unlike hub doubling, which originates during die manufacture, trail die effects are progressive service wear phenomena that intensify over the die's working life. The convergence of trail die distortion and late die state scratching on this specimen documents a die that was pushed to the limits of its useful service before retirement. Struck at Philadelphia (no mint mark) on copper-plated zinc planchets (97.5% zinc, 2.5% copper) at 2.5 grams and 19mm, from the 1986 mintage of 4,491,395,493 cents.
