1985 (P) Lincoln Memorial Cent - P-1DER-001T Trail Die Reverse

Description

1985P-1DER-001T is a reverse die: in TrailDies' code, 1985P gives the year and Philadelphia mint, 1 the cent, DER the reverse side, 001 the file and T marks trails. Faint lines rise from the tops of the inner letters of the motto EPU and head due north, 000°. TrailDies describes a late-die-state coin (stage C). The obverse is crossed by diagonal scratches, heavy through the U of TRUST and beneath its S and T. On the reverse, level scratches run through bays 3, 4, 5 and 6 of the Memorial. Louis Schaeffer found the die. The common explanation for trails is polishing the die with a rotary buff; some attribute them to the die moving against the hub.
