1985P-1DER-001T Trail Die Reverse
Error
Description
Rarer than its obverse counterparts, the 1985P-1DER-001T trail die reverse — discovered by Louis Schaeffer — documents one of the less common trail die orientations on the 1985 Philadelphia Lincoln Memorial cent, as reverse hubbing conditions less frequently produce the lateral movement that generates trail lines. Faint trail lines extend from the tops of the interior letters of E PLURIBUS UNUM, with the offset direction at 000 degrees (straight up, due north), meaning the drag occurred vertically during hubbing separation. The die is recorded at Stage C in late die state (LDS). Obverse markers include diagonal scratches with heavy scratching through the U of TRUST and under ST of TRUST. The reverse shows horizontal scratches in Memorial bays 3, 4, 5, and 6. Late die state on both sides indicates extensive use, yet the trail lines remained detectable — a testament to the permanence of hubbing artifacts that survive even as other features degrade. Schaeffer also discovered the companion trail die obverse 1985P-1DEO-001T. Struck at Philadelphia on copper-plated zinc planchets at 2.5 grams and 19mm from the 1985 mintage of approximately 5.65 billion cents. DIE MARKERS : Stage “C”, obverse is LDS – diagonal die scratches are seen on the obverse with heavy die scratching thru the U of TRUST and under the ST of TRUST. Reverse is LDS – horizontal die scratches are seen in bays 3, 4, 5 and 6.
