Description

Also discovered by Aisha Shahid, 1984P-1DEO-006T is a Stage B trail die variety on the 1984 Philadelphia Lincoln Memorial cent that presents an unusual combination of die states: the obverse reached a mid-die-state while the reverse progressed to a late die state. This mismatch is not uncommon in high-volume production, where obverse and reverse dies wear at different rates depending on design relief, striking pressure, and how many times each individual die was paired with a replacement partner. The obverse exhibits light scratches running northeast to southwest above the date — a directional pattern consistent with the linear contact that occurs when die faces slide against one another during stacking or separation. On the reverse, now in its late die state, a small die scratch appears in Memorial bay number 4, situated among the architectural bays of the Lincoln Memorial where foreign marks contrast sharply with the building's ordered geometry. The bay-number reference follows standard Memorial cent convention, counting from left to right across the facade. Struck at Philadelphia on copper-plated zinc planchets at 2.5 grams from the 1984 production of over 8.15 billion cents.
