Description
1984P-1DEO-002T, a 1984 Philadelphia cent obverse, does not show distinct trail lines. What TrailDies sees is distortion on the upper parts of IBERTY, a ramped extension running due north at about 000°, which it takes as the sign of a genuine trail die. Even so it carries the T of a trails die in its number, after 1984P (date and mint), 1 (cent), DEO (obverse design extension) and file 002. TrailDies adds that the coin's condition limits close study and that better examples may yet show lines. It is graded stage C, with an old gouge in the field below and right of IN, and two small gouges at the center of the O in ONE on the reverse. Trails are usually blamed on rotary polishing of the die, while some attribute them to the die moving against the hub.
