1984 (P) Lincoln Memorial Cent - P-1DEO-001T Trail Die Obverse

Description

TrailDies' 1984P-1DEO-001T shows faint lines from the last three letters of TRUST and from the upper left corners of the letters in LIBERTY, all at 330°, north-northwest. The code means a 1984 cent from Philadelphia (1984P, 1), and DEO for the obverse, followed by file 001 with its trails T. Because the coin is a late die state (stage C), TrailDies suggests the lines may be somewhat clearer on earlier strikes from the same die. The obverse shows damage around the W of WE, and the reverse a cluster of gouges below the D of UNITED. Louis Schaeffer found the die. Trails are most often attributed to polishing of the die with a rotary tool; some attribute them instead to the die moving against the hub.
