1984D-1DEO-001T Trail Die Obverse

Description

Discovered by Bill Slaughter of Arkansas, 1984D-1DEO-001T is a trail die obverse variety of the 1984 Denver Mint Lincoln Memorial cent. Trail dies occur when two dies come into direct contact outside the coining press, typically during storage or transport, transferring a ghost image from one die face to another. When the receiving die is used to strike coins, it produces pieces bearing a faint, incuse impression superimposed on the normal design. Trail dies are distinct from die clashes, which occur when dies strike each other inside the press without a planchet; trail dies result from unpressurized contact that leaves a more subtle, often partial image transfer. This variety is documented in Stage C, a late die state. Reverse late die state markers include a die dot next to the right side of T in UNITED and a die gouge between U and S of PLURIBUS. These reverse markers confirm the specific die pair beyond the trail die impression itself. Trail die varieties are among the scarcer categories of die errors, as the conditions producing them are uncommon. Attribution by Trail Dies.
