1984 (D) Lincoln Memorial Cent - D-1DEO-001T Trail Die Obverse

Description

1984D-1DEO-001T has faint trails both above and below the letters of LIBERTY, so TrailDies records two directions: 350°, a little west of north, and 170°, a little east of south. The lines from the tops of the letters point up toward the rim and those from the bottoms point down toward the portrait. In TrailDies' code, 1984D-1 is the Denver cent of that year, DEO shows the obverse carries the extension, and 001T is the file number with T for trails. It is a stage C coin from late in the dies' life, with nothing listed on the obverse. On the reverse there is a die dot just right of the T in UNITED, and a gouge sits between the U and the S of PLURIBUS. Bill Slaughter of Arkansas found the die. Trails are generally attributed to polishing the die with a rotary buff, though some attribute them to the die moving against the hub.
