1984 (D) Lincoln Memorial Cent - Repunched Mintmark WRPM-005

Description

The fifth repunched mint mark attributed by the Wexler team for the 1984 Denver Mint Lincoln Memorial cent, WRPM-005 extends the census of dies on which the D mint mark punch was applied with a positional offset. Cataloged as Wexler 1984-D 1¢ WRPM-005, this variety represents another unique die distinguished by the direction and magnitude of its repunching and by individual die markers that developed during use. Each received its mint mark through individual hand-punching — a Mint employee positioned a steel letter punch bearing the D over the die face and struck it with a hammer. Even slight movement between hammer blows, or intentional repositioning to correct an off-center first impression, produced the secondary images that define repunched mint marks. WRPM-005 documents one such instance from among the thousands of dies prepared for 1984-D cent production.
