Cataloged by the Wexler team as 1984-D 1¢ WRPM-003, this repunched mint mark variety of the 1984 Denver Mint Lincoln Memorial cent adds to the census of dies where the hand-punched D was applied with a positional offset. Repunched mint marks from the 1984 Denver issue are artifacts of a process that would persist for only six more years — in 1990, the Mint began placing the mint mark directly on the master die for Lincoln cents, eliminating the individual hand-punching step that produced RPMs. Every confirmed WRPM from 1984 therefore documents one of the final decades of a die preparation technique standard since the earliest days of American coinage.
