1984-D Repunched Mintmark WRPM-002

Description

Displaying D/D Northwest repunching with extensively documented die markers across two stages, WRPM-002 is one of the most diagnostically rich repunched mint marks in the 1984 Denver Mint Lincoln Memorial cent catalog. Cataloged as Wexler 1984-D 1¢ WRPM-002, the northwest direction places the remnant D to the upper left of the final position. In Stage A, the obverse shows a die scratch running west by south from below the left center of L in LIBERTY. By Stage B, this scratch has worn away, but new diagnostics appear: gouges east, south, and west of the mint mark, gouges northeast of the 4, and a gouge south of E in LIBERTY. On the reverse, Stage A shows no prominent markers, while Stage B reveals a gouge to the right of N in UNITED. This progressive evolution from Stage A to Stage B documents the die's service life — early scratches wearing away while new gouges develop — giving collectors stage-specific diagnostics for determining where a specimen falls in the production sequence. Denver struck approximately 5.57 billion 1984 cents on copper-plated zinc planchets at 2.5 grams. Die gouges east, south, and west of mint mark. Multiple die gouges northeast of 4 in date. Die gouge south of E in LIBERTY. Stage B: Die gouge right of N in UNITED.
