1984-D Repunched Mintmark RPM-002

Description

The second cataloged repunched mint mark for the 1984 Denver Mint Lincoln Memorial cent, RPM-002 documents another instance where the D mint mark punch was applied with a positional offset during die preparation. Three die stages are recorded: Stage A shows the obverse in early-to-mid die state with the reverse in mid die state, Stage B is mid die state (unconfirmed), and Stage C is late die state (unconfirmed). The early-to-mid die state observation for Stage A suggests that well-preserved examples from early in the die's life will show the repunching most clearly, before die wear begins to soften the secondary impression. Die markers UVC-3149 and DMR-006 serve as secondary diagnostics for confirming attribution. Repunched mint marks were common during the era when mint marks were individually hand-punched into working dies — a practice that continued until the Mint began including the mint mark on the master die in 1990 for Lincoln cents.
