1984-D Repunched Mintmark RPM-001

Description

Showing a D/D East repunched mint mark, RPM-001 is the first cataloged repunched mint mark for the 1984 Denver Mint Lincoln Memorial cent. Repunched mint marks occur when the mint mark punch is applied to a working die more than once with slight misalignment, leaving traces of the initial impression alongside the final position. On RPM-001, the D was punched a second time to the east of the original position, creating a visible remnant extending from the eastern edge of the final letter. Three die stages are documented: Stage A in early die state (unconfirmed), Stage B with both obverse and reverse in mid die state, and Stage C in late die state (unconfirmed). The progression from early through mid to late die state shows how the die surfaces evolved, with features becoming progressively softened and die polish lines potentially obscuring the RPM in later states.
