Description
TrailDies describes the trails on this 1982 Philadelphia cent obverse as short and soft-edged. They leave the upper left corners of the letters in LIBERTY and point due north, 000°, at the rim above. The listing number, 1982P-1DEO-001T, packs in the date and mint, a 1 for the one-cent denomination, DEO (TrailDies' label for an obverse design extension), serial 001 and the trails suffix T. Both dies had seen long service when the coin was struck, stage C in TrailDies' scheme. Level scratches run both above and beneath the OD of GOD, and the reverse has a gouge in bay four accompanied by curved scratches. Jason Cuvelier of New York found it. The cause usually cited is polishing of the die with a rotary buff, with a minority attributing trails to the die moving against the hub instead.
Die Markers
- Stage “C”, obverse is LDS – Horizontal die scratches both over and under the OD of GOD.
- Reverse is LDS – a die gouge is seen in bay four along with some curved die scratches.
