1982-D Repunched Mintmark WRPM-001
Error
Description
Cataloged by the Wexler Team as 1982-D 1¢ WRPM-001 and cross-referenced as CONECA RPM #1 and Coppercoins 1982D-1MM-002, this Lincoln Memorial Cent features a D/D North repunched mintmark specifically identified on the Large Date Bronze subvariety of the transitional 1982 date. The 1982 Lincoln cent is uniquely complex in U.S. numismatics because it was produced in four distinct subvarieties during the mid-year composition change: Large Date Bronze, Small Date Bronze, Large Date Zinc, and Small Date Zinc. The attribution as "Large Date Copper" (bronze) is therefore critical for proper identification, as RPM varieties must be matched to the correct subvariety. Obverse die markers include die scratches southwest from the RTY of LIBERTY. Reverse markers show north-south die scratches inside and below the C of CENT. The CONECA RPM #1 cross-reference establishes this as the primary repunched mintmark for the 1982-D Large Date Bronze variety, and the Coppercoins listing provides independent third-system documentation. The 1982-D Lincoln Memorial Cent Large Date Bronze was struck at the Denver Mint in the standard bronze composition of 95% copper and 5% tin and zinc, weighing 3.11 grams with a diameter of 19.05 mm — before the transition to the lighter copper-plated zinc composition (2.50 grams) later that year. Victor David Brenner designed the obverse portrait and Frank Gasparro designed the Lincoln Memorial reverse. The 1982 composition transition makes RPM varieties from this year particularly interesting to variety collectors because each specimen must first be identified by composition and date size before the RPM attribution can be applied, adding an extra layer of classification complexity that rewards careful examination.
